Yalloplate
A different look at copperplate variations with rachel yallop
Description
Sales for this course have now closed
During this three-month Zoom course over six sessions, delve into the intricacies of Rachel Yallop’s Copperplate variations. From January - March 2021, Rachel will take us on an in-depth look at the construction of her personal style.
Break free from formality
Learning Copperplate variations is a way to break free from a formal, more restrictive style, and try an alternative.
In this course we will look at the essential components of the Copperplate style and explore a new way of looking at letters. Many of the ‘rules’ are the same, but stroke terminals, joins, spacing and letter shapes can all be altered to make a style which is individual, fine and elegant, but with a definite personality.
We will look at the characteristics of two interchangeable styles. There will be a great attention to detail with analysis of the swelling line and the importance of accuracy in making the weighted parts of letters. We will study the many alternative lowercase letters and how to make joins, then move on to the capitals and how they fit with lowercase letters. We will then explore ways of enhancing them with flourishes.
Go beyond the letters with word and text design
Having gained a thorough grasp of letter style, we will study how to fit letters together to make a successful word design by employing a variable x-height and flourishing letters without a descender. These things are important in making a balanced, complete design, rather than a piece created by just placing letters one after the other. Further to this we will look at how to design a longer piece of text including layout, line spacing, responding to how lines interact with one another, and how simple flourishing can really enhance the work.
Each lesson will be broken down into manageable parts and Rachel will guide you through in a calm and careful way so that you can really understand the details and nuances of this exciting script.
