Description

Note: Sales for this class are now closed

Whether or not you were able to complete your long list of holiday cards, this Notes for the New Year workshop will help encourage the graceful art of correspondence in 2021. Let’s be inspired by the grace and opulence of the Victorian era and their fascination with “Scraps”. These small paper notes, labels and cards were used to express gratitude, humour or greetings between friends. These notes were savoured when they were received and preserved in scrapbooks. We will explore these decorative designs using a pen etching technique combined with delicate flourishes.

We will start with corners and expand to frames and labels that can embellish your notes and envelopes for years to come. The Victorian pen etching technique can be done in a single colour of ink or enhanced with watercolour and gold. You can make these designs as simple or as opulent as you would like regardless of your drawing experience. Let’s welcome this technique into our new year as we reach across the miles and share these delightful notes.

Learner Level

This workshop assumes a basic knowledge of the pointed pen and we welcome all skill levels from novice to advanced.

Materials

Supplies for the Victorian Ink Etching Technique

  • Pointed Pen in your favouite pen holder ( a medium flexible nib such as a Zebra G works well)

  • Pencil, eraser, small ruler ( I use a 5”cork backed metal ruler)

  • Any white, ivory or light pastel coloured drawing paper, cardstock or hot press watercolour paper. Heather uses Strathmore 400 series drawing paper size 8”x10 inch pad cut into strips of 4”x10”.

Alternatively, any of your favourite watercolours can be thinned to an ink consistency for this technique. If you choose to use watercolour you will also need a small container for the watercolour, a small brush to apply it to you pointed pen and a water dish and paper towel.

The entire workshop can be done with these few supplies above. If you want to enhance the designs with more opulent techniques, the supplies below are listed as optional.
