Dancing with Spencerian
with Martha Laurens
Class Description
A 3-Session Movement-Based Elegant Spencerian Course
Level: All levels
Spencerian Script is a system of handwriting that is built on movement, rhythm, and proportion. While it has clear guidelines and principles, Spencerian is not meant to feel stiff or mechanical. When movement is understood, the writing can adapt, breathe, and flow. Dancing with Spencerian is a three-session class that explores how Spencerian works when conditions change, such as writing faster or slower, writing larger or smaller, using more or less pressure, or adjusting slant. Instead of treating Spencerian as a fixed set of rules, this class explores how the system responds when the hand learns to move with confidence.
This is not a decorative or flourishing class, and it does not replace Spencerian fundamentals. The focus is on learning how to work within the Spencerian system, even when writing conditions shift.
What you will explore:
How to keep your writing clear and balanced when you write faster, slower, bigger, or smaller
How rhythm and movement help your letters stay consistent
How confident movement makes writing feel more natural and less forced
How to stay true to Spencerian without making it feel stiff or rigid
Through guided movement exercises and exploratory writing, you will learn to notice what happens when you stop over-correcting, work around mistakes and allow your hand to move more freely.
This class is ideal for students who:
Feel constrained by overly literal interpretations of Spencerian.
Struggle when speed, size, or pressure changes.
Want to deepen their understanding of Spencerian as a living handwriting system, not a frozen formula.
Dancing with Spencerian invites students to move within the rules without being imprisoned by them, cultivating handwriting that is responsive, grounded, and alive while remaining unmistakably Spencerian and explored as artistic writing.
